SEO

SEO - art and science.

SEO or Search Engine Optimization is the science and art of getting your website ranking higher on the search results page.

You know yourself, the earlier or higher a site appears in the search results, the more likely you are to visit that site.

It's a vital component of any effective internet marketing plan. A great site is no use to you if no-one is visiting it.

As mentioned at the start, SEO is both a science and an art.

The science part
This mainly comes from understanding the inner workings of search engines. How they rank sites, what criteria do they use when indexing sites. This is sometimes called "natural" ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results.
I love technology but have no science or technical skills. This is where I tend to employ people better than me in those areas. I recommend you do the same if you're also not technically minded. Spend more time on the art of search marketing.

The art part of SEO

This revolves around creating content that search engines 'read' as being relevant, fresh and unique to a topic. Search engines just love content. They see new features, articles, videos, newsletters and the like as evidence that the site they are coming from is dynamic, credible and newsworthy. Any web site marketing site needs constant updating of content. Research can help with what relevant topics people are searching for in your category.
If you're technically-minded but draw a blank when it comes to creative writing and ideas then this is when you employ someone with those skills. Like anything, it'll cost you money but the work will be better. Plus, the time you save agonizing over a white screen looking for ideas you can put into more profitable areas of your expertise.
